Special Cranker

The Special Cranker by EarthQuaker Devices is an all-discrete analog distortion enhancement device designed to provide extra grit and boost to your signal without significantly altering your tone. It is intended to retain the natural nuances and character of your amp. The pedal features the following controls:

1. Level: Adjusts the output volume. Unity gain is between 10-12 o’clock depending on which diodes are selected.
2. Diode Selector: Germanium on the left for a softer and more transparent tone, and Silicon on the right for a brighter and more modern edge.
3. More: Adjusts the gain. This control changes the bias of the transistor, allowing for a range of overdrive tones.
4. Tone: Rolls off highs counterclockwise and boosts highs clockwise. A flat response can be found around 3 o’clock.

The design of the Special Cranker builds upon the characteristics of the Speaker Cranker, offering a spongy, dynamic, and touch-sensitive character with more gain, double the output volume, an added Tone control, and a diode selector switch featuring both asymmetrical Silicon diodes and a new Germanium diode option.

The pedal is responsive to playing dynamics and provides excellent clarity. The Level control adjusts the output from nothing to nearly double at maximum. The Special Cranker is suitable for guitar, bass, and synth applications.
