The Lumen by Hungry Robot is a state-variable FET-based overdrive pedal designed with unique features and technical specifications. The pedal incorporates an active State Variable Filter, which is commonly found in the synth world, offering more clarity and presence than standard passive tonestacks. The filter consists of three individual filters (low pass, band pass, high pass) that split the incoming signal into three frequency ranges and amplify those ranges without tone loss.
The overdrive is designed without diode clipping, utilizing a natural approach of cascading FET gain stages to create distortion by soaking the transistors with gain, providing a more organic, tube-like saturation than a clipping section. Additionally, The Lumen features a clean blend control, allowing users to mix back in some of their clean tone. At 12 o'clock, the clean signal is near unity gain, and past 12 o'clock, it amplifies the clean signal.
The specific controls on The Lumen include:
- "Drive" – Sets the gain level on the first FET stage
- "Clean" – Sets the level of the clean blend
- "Level" – Sets the volume of the drive signal
- "H.P" – Sets the level of the high pass filter
- "B.P" – Sets the level of the band pass filter
- "L.P" – Sets the level of the low pass filter
Technical Specifications:
- Dimensions: 3.7” x 4.7”
- Powering: 9V DC - Negative Center - 2.1mm Barrel
- Current draw: 93mA
The Lumen is handmade in Iowa, USA, and features true bypass functionality. It is designed to provide guitarists with a versatile overdrive pedal that offers unique tonal shaping capabilities and a natural, tube-like saturation without diode clipping.
